Are You The One?
The LORD is my
strength and my might, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I
will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
Let us invoke
the presence of God: LORD, we thankyou for adding a new day in our life and
bringing us together here. As we are worshipping and meditating in your Holy
sanctuary, we invoke the presence of your holy spirit and filled each and
everyone by your spirit. We asked in Jesus name. Amen.
Shall we all
stand and Sing Chorus Create in me a clean heart O God (CH no).. Pease be
seated.
May I ask Mr.
Gospelmawia to intercede for others on our behalf and the congregation will
respond by singing Give your to my heart O Lord…
Thank you Mr.
Gospela. The given passage for this morning meditation Luke 7:18-35, which
talked about Messengers from John the Baptist to Jesus. Before we go further
may I ask Ms. Vanlabiaktluangi Sailo to read out some portion of the given
passage.
Thank you Nu-I
for your participation.
If we look
through the whole passage Luke 7:18-35, we see many issues, story and
illustration. this morning I may not be able to take out all those things, so,
I will take out only some few points.
Shall we pray.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable by thy
sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.”

the given passage we have read that John sends two of his disciples to Jesus
with an important question. “Are you the one who is to come, or shall
we look for another?” John wants to know if Jesus is the one who is
the Messiah. We may be amazed that John asked this question. John knew he was
the forerunner to Jesus. This was told to him from the day of his miraculous
birth. John knew he was the voice in the wilderness to prepare for the coming
of the Lord as we seen in Luke 3:4-6. John went about preaching, “Behold,
the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29). John was the one who baptized
Jesus when the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the
form of a dove. He heard and saw these things. However, now John is in prison.
Things do not seem to be going according to plan. John is supposed to be
preparing the way for Jesus, not sitting in prison for preaching the good news.
So John sends two of his disciples with an important question while John sits
in prison. Are you the one or are we looking for another?
Jesus’
response to John’s question is awesome. Verse 21 tells us that during the time
of this question Jesus is healing many people of diseases, plagues, and evil
spirits. He is also healing the blind and giving them sight. Jesus has a
message for John. I think it is important to notice the gentleness in Jesus’
answer. Jesus was not angry with John for asking this. Jesus gives John the
encouragement he needs. Go tell John that the blind receive sight, the lame
walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the
poor have the good news preached to them. Go tell John what you have seen me
do. Jesus did not do this display as some sort of power show to prove himself
to John. Rather the miracles that Jesus
performs are the fulfillment of messianic prophecies.
Jesus’
answer is that he is fulfilling the promises concerning the Messiah. His answer
by his miracles means, “Yes, I am the one who was the come. I am the
Messiah.”
The
conclusion of Jesus’ message is just as important. “And blessed is the
one who is not offended by me” (7:23).
Jesus’ words are a slight warning for John and for all others who learn about
Jesus. Do not be tripped up by the way Jesus carried out his mission. The style
of Jesus’ messianic mission did not match most forms of Jewish eschatological
expectation. Many had the wrong expectations about what Jesus would do. Many
thought the Messiah would be the overthrower of Rome. Many thought it would be a time of
economic prosperity when the Messiah came. Jesus teaches a very important
lesson. Do not have the wrong expectations about Jesus and what he will
do. Trust that he is the Christ even though he did not meet the
expectations of the people.
From this passage we can reflect today’s context..
We
have many of the same issues with Jesus today. Many discredit that there is a
God because if there was a God, then why is there war? Why do innocent children
suffer? Why doesn’t God intervene against evil? How can there be so much evil
in the world? Others have different expectations of Jesus. Even John seems to
have certain expectations of Jesus. Jesus makes the point: he is the Lord and
Messiah but he does not do things according to our plans or ways
Jesus’ View of John (7:24-30)
Once
Jesus sends John’s messengers back to John, Jesus begins preaching to the
crowds about John. Jesus asks what the people expected to see when they went
into the wilderness to see John. Do you think you are going to find a push over
living in the wilderness preaching? Did you think you were going to find a
luxurious, laid back preacher living in the wilderness? He ate locusts with
wild honey. What kind of person did you think you would find? The point is that
they knew there was a prophet living out there. They knew that John was a
prophet from God. They knew John was great. That is why they went out to the
wilderness to see him.
Then
Jesus intensifies his point. Yes, John was a prophet. But he was greater than a
prophet. He was the prophesied forerunner to the Messiah. John is the one the
prophet Malachi declared would come to prepare the way for the Lord. Not only
was John a great prophet, he was the greatest person ever born of woman. Jesus
simply said that besides himself, John is the greatest person to ever walk the
earth. No one was greater than John.
Carefully
consider what Jesus says in verse 28. “Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” John
was the greatest person to ever walk the earth besides Jesus. But if you are in
God’s kingdom then you are greater than John. Do you understand how great it is
to be in a relationship with Jesus and belonging to his kingdom! Your position
in Christ is so privileged and so great that your relationship with God is as
precious as the greatest prophets of God.
When
the crowd heard these words, they glorified God declaring him just. The people
are acknowledging that God’s way is right. They are accepting that God’s call
for repentance was correct. They needed to repent. However, the Pharisees and
the lawyers continued to reject the purpose of God for them.
Rebuking The People (7:31-35)
Jesus
now tells a parable to explain the condition of these people. He says they are
like children, but not in a good way. They are like children who call to one
another, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a
dirge, and you did not weep.” Jesus calls the people immature,
complaining children. Notice the parable is of complaining kids who cannot get
the other kids to do what they want. I am quite experienced with this problem
with my own children and their friends. A child cries and complains because the
others won’t do what he or she wants them to do. We played the flute but you
didn’t dance. You did not do what we wanted. We sang a dirge and you didn’t
weep. You did not play by our rules and fit our expectations.
Jesus
uses this parable to describe the people’s criticisms of John and himself. The
people knew that John was a prophet from God. Since John did not come eating
bread or drinking wine the people declared he had a demon and rejected him.
Jesus came eating bread and drinking wine but the people rejected him also,
calling him a drunkard and a glutton. It did not matter how the messenger came,
they rejected the messenger and the message. Rather than listening to God’s
messengers, they are telling the messengers what to do. They want Jesus and
John to play by their rules. Here is what we want John to be. If Jesus is the
Messiah then this is what we want him to do.
Are
we complaining or following? Do we dictate to God our terms of service or do we
submit to Christ’s terms? Too often we want God to follow our rules. We will
obey if God does what we want him to do. We will come to worship when we want.
We will serve when it is convenient for us. God will accept what I want to give
him. When we think like this we are just like these people that Jesus was
addressing. God does not submit to us. We submit to him.
THY WILL BE DONE
Good
morning friends. Unexpectedly I have to stand before you though I was not
included in the first Rota. A new revised came
out day before yesterday and I was told to be a preacher for this morning.
But
friends don’t be discourage cause a spiritual persons like us not need much
time for preparation as we are prepared from up above.
Let
us here the word of God from Gospel According to Luke 1:38.. Then Mary Said,
“Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.
And
also from Romans 12:1&2: I appeal to you therefore brothers and sister, by
the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may
discern what is the will of God-what is good and acceptable and perfect. May
God bless us all through the reading and hearing of his holy word.
For
this morning reflection, many thoughts and questions came into me and I don’t
even know which one to be shared. As we know we are pondering upon the theme
“Thy will be done”, first question came into me is what is the will of God? And
Secondly how will we know what is the will of God? The simplest way to know the
will of God may be reading and meditating upon the Holy Scripture and also
prayer. But, we may not know all and we may not be able to identify all the
will of God only through scripture and prayer. But I’ll leave this part for you
to give the best answer.
This
morning I want to stress sacrifice
as the channel to realize the will of God.
There
may be many times when we find difficult to accept the will of God. Peter the disciple
of Jesus also struggling with this problem as we see in Mark chapter 8. Peter knew that it was God’s will for Jesus
to suffer and died on the cross, but Peter did not want that kind of a
Savior. Peter wanted a Savior who would
conquer the Romans and give the Apostles, positions of power and authority in
this world. Jesus then said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!”.
Sometimes
the will of God look very strange from the human point of view. Why the savior
died at the hand of human whom they are going to be saved by him? Peter also considered
from human view and he could not accept the will of God and he could not say
YES to the plan of God. But God has his own way and that’s why Jesus scolded
Peter also. Unlike human expectations Jesus had to suffer for the live of
others. He had to sacrifice his body for our redemption. Even he was felt
uncomfortable and asked God to remove that cup for him, but still then he said
“yet. Not what I want, but, what you want”.
In
economics we used to learn that “Human wants are unlimited”, but, in Christian
religion we have to learn “not what we want, but what God’s want’. In order to meet
what God wants us to do, we have to sacrifice ourselves. Sometimes we may think
that the will of God is awkward, but if we sacrifice ourselves to God, his will
is always more important than our own reputation.
If we go through the story of the birth of
Jesus Christ, we found that Mary was told to bear a baby without having man. I
used to think that how it would be difficult for Mary to Amen the will of God? As
we all know she was engaged with Joseph. And if she bored a baby even without
knowing the father, how much her neighbors and the villagers will murmuring
upon her. I am sure that Mary will not say easily ‘let it be with me according
to your word’. To say “Thy will be done” she had to sacrifice herself, her
prestige, her reputation and she had to emptied herself for the Glory of God
and for the birth of Jesus Christ.
Yes,
If we want others to see Jesus on us, we should be always ready to say “Thy
will be done” and not only saying but we should also sacrifice our body to God.
We are called not to live as we want but to live as how God want us to live…May
GOD bless this short sharing. AMEN
OBEDIENCE
In this very outset, I
would like to give my sincere thanks to the worship committee for giving me
this opportunity and the almighty God, who sustain my life till this far. This
morning my preaching may not be academically sound since I’m a little bit free
from academic pressure.
Shall we pray?
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be
acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.
As we are meditating upon
the theme Obedience for this week, I also prepared my sermon on this topic.
Firstly, let us see the
Old Testament and New Testament concept of Obedience.
1. The Old Testament
Conception: The highest significance of the usage of Obedience in the Old
Testament is that of the relationship of man to God. Obedience is the supreme
test of faith in God and reverence for Him. The Old Testament conception of
obedience was vital. It was the one important relationship which must not be
broken. While sometimes this relation may have been formal and cold, it
nevertheless was the one strong tie which held the people close to God.
2. The New Testament
Conception: In the New Testament a higher spiritual and moral relation is
sustained than in the Old Testament. The importance of obedience is just as
greatly emphasized. The test of fellowship with Yahweh in the Old Testament is
obedience. The bond of union with Christ in the New Testament is obedience
through faith, by which they become identified and the believer becomes a
disciple.
Now, let us look some of
the cost of obedience from the Bible:
1. Shame/dishonor: We all
know the story of the birth of Jesus. This morning I’m not going to preach a
Christmas sermon…but when ever I think about the story, the obedience of Mary
always touch my heart.
We know Mary
was foretold that she will bore a baby. I used to think that how difficult it
will be to accept the word of God for Mary. When the angel spoke to her, Mary
was not having a husband. She was engaged with Joseph. At that very situation
Mary might think about how her neighbors will murmured upon her if she
conceived a baby. She might also consider that how Joseph’s family will think
that. Yes, bearing a child without knowing the father by an engaged woman is a
shameful thing. I have no doubt that Mary also considered everything before she
said “Be it to me according to thy word”. But, for the birth of Jesus Christ,
Messiah, Mary obeyed the word of God by receiving all those disrespect and
shame.
2. The cost of obedience is
loss: If we look the story of Abraham, we can imagine that how much he paid for
obeying the word of God. Abram or Abraham was called when he was 75 years old.
Though it is not clearly written in the Bible we can assume that an old man
with wife would surely be settled everything in his place. As they are agro
based society he might have field or cattle. But he was called to leave everything
behind. Let us imagine that if we were Abraham, how will we answered the
calling of God, we may find very difficult to accept the word of God. But,
Abraham obeyed the word of God by losing his parents, his kindred, and all his
belongings.
After he left
his country, God asked him to sacrifice his only son for burnt offering. After
leaving everything, asking his only son, we may think that this is too much.
But Abraham still accepted the word of God. Yes, to obey the word of God, we
have to loss many things. We have to loss our Job, our high status, benefit and
all…
3. Self-Emptiness: To obey
the word of God, kenosis, emptiness of self is also another prerequisite. If we
read Philippians 2 we see that Jesus emptied himself to obey the word of God. 6who,
though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something
to be exploited, 7but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8he
humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a
cross. To save sinful human beings, God had a planned to sacrifice his only
begotten son. For Jesus Christ denying himself by surrendering his divinity and
taking the form of slave and born in human likeness was not an easy task. But he obeyed his father even up to death,
death on the cross.
My dear brother and
sister, this morning let us consider ourselves again how far we are obedient? We
may claim that we are a committed person, but without obeying the word of God
commitment or sacrifice only is not enough. Samuel said that obedience is
better than sacrifice. This is very true. We are called not only to be a
pastor, a missionary, but to obey the word of God. Here in this place or in our
near future, God may want us to do something for him. If we look only
ourselves, we will surely find many reasons not to obey the word of God. We
have to remember that in order to be obedient there may be a time when we have
to lose something, sometimes we may have to do some shameful things, or we may
need to deny ourselves.
But I want to make sure
that obedience never end only in a bad condition. Rather obedience always bears
fruit for our good at the end. Let me bring out some reward of obedience.
1. Firstly obedience returns
in happiness: As we see in Luke chapter 1:48, when Mary obeyed the word of God,
she was filled with happiness and she was rejoiced in the Lord. Yes, sometimes
we may think that obedience cost hardship. But, it always ends with happiness.
2. Secondly, Obedience brings
blessings: The story of Abraham reminds us that obedience bring many blessings.
On his way to the Promised Land Abraham was blessed with cattle, silver and
Gold. And God gave him a son from his barren wife and became the father of a
great nation. They even call him father of faith.
3. And Thirdly, obedience
brings healing: I hope we all know the story of Naaman which is from 2. Kings
5. 1 – 27. Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favor with his
master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty
warrior, suffered from leprosy. He learned that there was a man of God named
Elisha who could heal his leprosy. So, he went to him and asked him to cure his
leprosy. So, Elisha told Namaan to go and wash in the Jordan
river seven times. But, Naaman was very angry and went away.
Washing in the river Seven times was not a difficult task, but for a man like
him, what Elisha said to him was just like making fun of him. But after that,
his servant asked him to do what a man of God said to him, so Naaman immersed
himself seven times in the Jordan
and he became clean. Yes, sometimes very difficult to understand what God has
spoken to us, but just obeying himself is a healing for us.
4. Obedience brings spiritual
insight: If we sincerely choose to do God’s will, it is not difficult to
determine what His will is. From human side we may see difficulties but obeying
the will of God brings spiritual insight that can help us through.
5. Obedience also brings
life: The obedience of Jesus to his father brings us life. Because of the sin
Adam and Eve we all are death. We were separated from God, but Jesus obeyed God
that brings us life. And, to share that life we have to obey God. Our obedience
is nit only for ourselves; it can also bring life for other.
While we are pondering
upon obedience, I feel very important to share what can be happened if we
disobeyed God. We see many people who disobey God in the Bible. If wee
carefully examine the live of those who disobey God, we can see that God never
spared who disobeyed him. The Bible says that son who disobeyed God will not
see life but the wrath of God abide on him. So, if we disobeyed God, the
punishment will surely come to us.
In 1st Samuel
we see that Saul was appointed as a king by God to invade Amalek. But Saul
disobeyed what God has spoken to him, and God really repent that he had made
Saul for the king of Israel
and he turned away from Saul. So, friends, we came here by obeying the voice of
God, but let us remember that as soon as we disobeyed God, God will surely turn
away from us.
Lastly, what I want to
mentioned is to obey the word of God we should disobeyed ourselves. Sometimes, we always give more important to
our desire than the voice of God. But, to glorify the name of God and to extent
his Kingdom, God want us to listen him, to hear him and to obey his command. May
God bless us all.
